Be Careful With Cheap Granite Countertops

Cheap Granite Countertops

There is a key difference between finding a good deal, finding inexpensive products, and finding cheap and inferior products. You will feel great about finding a good deal, but cheap granite countertops can simply be a giant headache for you. The challenge is that many homeowners will start with a small budget. They will use most of that budget towards construction expenses and their bathroom or kitchen cabinetry. When they start looking at countertops, they fall in love with the beauty of quartz, marble, and granite countertops. This love affair inevitably results in a quest to get their dream countertops at an extremely discounted price.

Naturally, there are countless distributors, fabricators, and granite shops offering extremely cheap granite countertops. You will see them advertise in local home flyers, home magazines, and the newspaper with beautiful photos and low prices per square foot. So what is the catch? Well, the pricing will usually leave out all the "other" pricing such as a granite countertop edges profile fee, cut-fee, or sink installation fees. Additionally, it is common practice for these shops to sell 2 centimeter granite versus the better 3 centimeter versions. Thicker tops will generally last longer and hold up better to day to day usage. The other common practice is for cheap granite countertops to be made from scrap piles. Every kitchen or bathroom will have scrap segments left over and these companies try to make some use of these scraps. If you are looking for a countertop for a small space, this is not an issue. However, if you are looking for multiple pieces for a larger space you will realize that the scrap piece will not match the other pieces.

Another risk with cheap granite countertops is that they may be sold without the proper plywood under support. This means that your countertops may be installed without the proper structural support and may crack over time. The larger the piece, the greater the risk of such damage. It is an real nuisance and pain to change your countertops once they are already installed. In fact, it may be impossible to even find the same shading and details if you have to purchase another piece of granite. This is an important consideration to think about. It is expensive to buy granite countertops once. It is even more expensive to have to purchase them two times!

Finally, be careful of importers selling inferior products. Often times, products that are rejected by large home improvement stores will be sold at fire sale type of prices. If the materials were rejected by the quality control inspectors of large companies, you too should reject them. This really goes back to the golden rule that if something sounds too good to be true, it is! You should avoid any cheap granite countertops that raise a red flag. No reputable business will sell you a product for a significant, unexplainable reason. The more educated you are, the more likely you will find your dream material and avoid the potential pitfalls of cheap granite countertops.
