Considerations Before Selecting Your Granite Countertop Edges

Granite Counter Tops

Prior to visiting your local granite fabricator or distributor, it is recommended that you become familiar with granite countertop edges from both design perspective and cost of granite countertops. The edge profile is an often ignored detail that can have a big impact on the finished look and feel of your kitchen. Once you have made your decision on the edge profile there is no turning back, so it is important to get it right the first time.

The first recommendation when establishing your granite countertop edges is for you to determine whether your kitchen is traditional, transitional, contemporary, or modern in design. Once you know the cabinet design direction, try to look at as many kitchens within that design genre as possible. Look at the cabinet door profile as it relates to the granite edge profile. It is important that the designs be complementary rather than one taking attention away from the other. Pay particular attention to the door hardware styles and finishes relative to the edge profiles. At first, you may feel like you are starting at the same kitchen over and over. However, once you train your eyes to look at the details you will begin to notice key differences.

The next consideration for granite countertop edges is to become familiar with the name and the respective price point.

I. Standard Edges - These are considered entry price point edge profiles and will have a minimal impact on the finished pricing of your countertops.

1/4" Bevel Edge Straight Edge 1/4" Round Edge Half Bullnose Edge Demi Bullnose Edge 1/2” Bevel Edge

II. Mid-Priced / Upgraded Edges - These are considered to be mid-priced granite countertop edges and will increase the price of your selected granite. They are slightly more labor intensive and time consuming to produce.

  • Colors organized by based color and price which will help you determine the best options based from you budget.

III. Premium / Design Edges - These are the most expensive granite countertop edges you can select. If you are price conscious, it is recommended to stay away from this selection as they are extremely labor intensive and time consuming to produce.

  • Inverted Ogee Edge
  • Plattner Bullnose Edge
  • Sidestep Cove Edge
  • Demi Angled Edge

For additional countertops ideas to consider when selecting your granite countertop edges look at the bottom edge of the drawer. If the bottom edge is squared off, it leaves less room for your fingers when closing a drawer. So a square bottom counter can increase the likelihood of smashing your fingers between the granite countertops and your cabinets. Also consider that some of the more ornate and elaborate edge profiles are thinner. Thinner pieces of granite can be vulnerable to chipping or breaking. Although granite is a very dense stone and home owners consider it to be extremely strong, it can be a fragile material when it has thinner walls and edges. Take all of these factors in to consideration including the edge profile that you simply think will look the best.
