Countertop Measurements - Do It Once, Do It Right

Countertop

It can not be emphasized enough how important taking proper countertop measurements is. It is very easy to get caught up in the excitement of your bathroom home improvement project only to not pay particular attention to very important details.

The purpose of this article to help first time home improvement enthusiasts to take their measurements one and to make sure they are perfect.

First, be sure you've obtained a pencil, note pad, and a good tape measure. If your countertop is longer than 48 inches, we recommend that you have a friend assist you with the task. Ideally, we would recommend that you sketch your countertop on your notepad and label each of the sides as A, B, C, and so forth. For instance, if your countertop has (4) sides - you will end up with sides A, B, C, and D. The easiest countertops to measure are ones which are perfectly symmetrical and of square or rectangular shape.

You are now ready to measure your existing countertop. Start by measuring the distance from left to right. We will refer to these measurements are the width measurements. Unless you have an unusual shape, most countertops will tend to have the same width measurements along the front edge as the back edge. If that is not the case with your countertops, don't worry and we will be able to accommodate your requirements as well. Next, take your depth countertop measurements by measuring the distance from the front to back.
You should do this again along the left and right sides.

Be sure you have noted your measurements next to the corresponding diagram you drew on your notepad. If your countertop does not exist and all you have is the cabinet, we will simply add one (1") inch to your cabinet measurements to determine your proper countertop measurements. If your countertop is missing, you will also have the added benefit of being able to see your support points and how much room you may have to accommodate an under mount sink.

As you take your countertop measurements, be sure to maintain accuracy to within oneeight (1/8") of an inch. It may seem insignificant, but an eight of an inch can make a difference. You don't want to fill a gap with caulking just because you did not measure accurately. Just to be safe, take each measurement twice and make sure there is not a difference between the measurements you took.

Finally, make sure you measure the following:

  • The distance from the center of the drain to the left edge.

  • The distance from the center of the drain to the right edge. (Note that if your bowl is
located in the center of the countertop, this will be an identical measurement to the one
    above referencing the left edge.)

  • The number of faucet holes and the distance between the two furthest faucet holes.
(Note that if you have a single hole faucet, this does not apply to you. If however, you
have 3 faucet holes you should end up with a measurement of four inches or eight
    inches.)

  • The height and width of any back splash or side splash.
