Information to Know Before Getting a Dressing Table

Back in the 18th century when the dressing table was first used, it was typically only found in the homes of royalty and aristocrats. Back when they were first introduced, the dressing or vanity table was filled with drawers and compartments where the lady of the house would be able to have a place where she could do her beauty routine, apply makeup, do her hair, take care of her teeth and much more. There was sometimes a cistern on the table where water would be available.

As time went one, more homes began adding a dressing table and today, though optional, many women like a place where they can get ready for their days. Dressing tables are usually rectangular or kidney shaped and is made of many types of materials like maple, oak, pine, cherry, or metals like nickel or stainless steel. There are usually many drawers and compartments for storage and also usually have an open counter where things can be placed that are needed often.

Most women prefer a dressing table with a mirror attached, but there are some without this feature. Most of them also have a matching stool. For the dressing tables that have a stool and a place to sit with your knees under the table, these are called kneehole tables. Not all dressing tables are kneehole tables, however, there are plenty of tables with no seat and smaller compartments. This type of dressing table is made for men. They are typically smaller and have rows of drawers that can hold watches, wallets, money clips, cufflinks, ties and handkerchiefs.

Before deciding on what type of dressing table you may need, you should think about your specific needs. For instance, if you are planning on using the table for all of your daily prepping needs, you probably will want to choose a dressing table where you can sit that has a lot of storage and drawers for all of your makeup, hair accessories, beauty supplies and even areas where you can put your jewelry. If you are someone who may not need all of the storage capacity of a traditional table, you can choose a smaller table that has room for some things you will need, but that will not take up a lot of space.

You will also need to decide on the look of your dressing table. There are very traditional looking tables on the market and you can even get antique dressing tables that may go back to the 18th century. Though you will be paying the expense for those tables, many people love them and they add a definite charm to the home. Other people will prefer a table that is more modern. If this is the case, you can buy them online, at your local furniture store or even at your local home improvement store. If you are feeling creative, you can even make your own, but it would be recommended you have some experience with wood working before starting this kind of project. Whatever you decide, make sure you are choosing something that you like.
