The Advantages and Disadvantages of a Vessel Sink

One of the biggest advantages of installing a vessel sink in your new bathroom project is just simply style. Having a vessel sink is something very unique and definitely has a “wow” factor to it. A vessel sink after all is not something you would see in every bathroom. You also gain some counter space by having a vessel sink, because as the sink is mounted on top of the counter, the space around it is still available for use.

Another advantage is that the bathroom vessels are very easy to install. It’s just a matter of cutting a hole into your counter top, and depending on the type of top surface you have, for most people it’s very easy to do, even for those who consider themselves as DIY novices. You can also easily change the vessel sink if you wanted to. For example, lets say that in a couple of years you are tired of your old vessel sink. You can quickly and easily install a different one with very little hassle. You could even decide to change to a more conventional sink in the future if you wanted to, and it’s likely you wouldn’t have to change your counter tops.

Of course as with all things there are also some disadvantages for owning a vessel sink in your bathroom. One of these is keeping up with the latest designs and fads. There are many different styles of vessel sink, some of which are considered to be highly popular now, but perhaps in a year or so will have gone out of fashion. A standard sunken sink however is unlikely to go out of fashion, because it’s there for functionality more than fashion.

Keeping your vessel sink clean is fairly easy, but you should take into consideration that it can sometimes be difficult to clean right into the space between the bottom of the vessel sink and the counter top. Of course, nothing is impossible, but it’s a known fact that vessel sinks can be a little more work to clean than a conventional sink.

You will have to take more care with your vessel sink than with a more conventional sink like bathroom lavatory. The top edge of your vessel sink for example will be more exposed than with a sunken sink. Whilst vessel sinks are very strong, these areas will be more prone to cracking if exposed to a considerable force. This is just something to bear in mind, so you might want to consider this for the adult’s bathroom, and leave a conventional sink in the kids’ bathroom.

Finally, take into consideration the height of your bathroom vanity before installing your vessel sink. Vanities that are of standard height will accommodate your vessel sink, but certain sinks are quite tall. Therefore the total height of your sink and the vanity could make your sink difficult to use. You can usually get vanities that are slightly shorter that are designed with vessel sinks in mind.
